Bus, watermelon trailer crash on I-19 closes Canoa rest area

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Highway Patrol is investigating a bad crash south of Tucson on Interstate-19 that sent two people to a local hospital.

The incident involves a mini Sahuarita school district bus and a semi truck at the Canoa rest area.

Officers say the school bus was traveling northbound when it sustained a tire blowout. The driver lost control, causing the bus to swerve to the right, off the roadway and through the right away fence.

The bus hit a parked semi tractor-trailer while at the Canoa rest area. The driver and the driver's aide from the bus were transported to UMC for their injuries. The bus driver was transported via ground ambulance and the aide was air lifted due to serious injury. The semi truck driver was transported via ambulance and has been treated and released from UMC.

There were no children on the bus.

Due to the impact with the trailer, the rest area will be closed for an indefinite time while the trailer and bus are removed and the area is cleaned up due to the spilled load of watermelons  from the trailer.
