PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A mother accused of trying to to give away her 6-month-old daughter at a Phoenix gas station has pleaded not guilty.

Rozenna Luna, 36, entered her plea at her arraignment Monday. Her next scheduled court appearance is July 18.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department said investigators learned from witnesses that 36-year-old Rozenna Luna was asking strangers if they wanted a "free child" as she attempted to give the baby girl away to total strangers in the area of 2300 W. Bethany Home Road on May 15.

Thompson said Luna was intoxicated and had smoked methamphetamine two days before the incident.

According to investigators, Luna had made no attempts to contact safe haven locations, government agencies or family members for help.

The clerk at the convenience store called police but Luna also called police. She told police she called them because she knew she had misdemeanor warrants and would be arrested and go to jail, which meant she would not have to care for her baby.

Luna was arrested on one count of child abuse as well as misdemeanor warrants for her arrest.

Police said her baby, Elena, was not harmed. She was turned over to Child Protective Services.
