Twenty-two people have been arrested after a federal, tribal and state investigation into drug trafficking and related violent crime on and near the Yavapai-Apache Nation, federal authorities said.

They said five other suspects are facing tribal criminal charges and two are facing state charges.

Authorities said Monday that almost all of the people charged were taken into custody over the past several days or were already in custody on other charges.

Three remain fugitives.

Tribal officials say methamphetamine has plagued the Yavapai-Apache Nation for years and authorities have been trying to crack down on traffickers.

"The United States Attorney's Office will continue to support community impact investigations to reduce violent crime and drug activity both on and off the reservations," said U.S Attorney John S. Leonardo

The FBI's Northern Arizona Safe Streets Task Force, the Yavapai County Drug Task Force and the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Police Department led the coordinated enforcement action.
