EL MIRAGE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 4-year-old child was rescued from a filthy El Mirage home after police were called there to investigate a domestic assault incident.

Officers said as they arrived at the home on Sunday, they found two people arguing in the doorway.

After speaking with the couple separately, police learned Robert Romero had tried to enter their home but his girlfriend, Lorinda White, blocked his way. Romero said after he finally got inside, White punched him in the side of his head, police said.

Officers entered the home and said they were overwhelmed by the smell of animal urine and excrement throughout the dwelling.

Police said they saw about seven dogs and three cats. White and Romero have lived in the home for 1 1/2 years, officers said.

Child Protective Services took temporary custody of the child.

White was booked into jail on several charges, including child abuse.
