Cordes Named Capital One Academic All-American

TUCSON, Ariz. –Arizona swimmer Kevin Cordes earned a spot on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday afternoon.

This marks the third academic honor this season for Cordes, which also includes the men's Capital One Academic All-District and Pac-12 All-Academic teams.

Cordes, a rising junior, was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year, won two individual national championships in record setting fashion and was part of a relay national championship at the NCAA Championships. Cordes broke the American, NCAA and U.S. Open records in both the 100 yard (50.74) and 200 yard breast (1:48.68), making him the fastest swimmer in history for those two events.

He was also part of the national champion and school-record breaking 400 medley relay team as he swam the fastest 100 breast split in relay history. Cordes opened the 2012-13 campaign by setting a pair of American records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the AT&T Winter Nationals in November and followed it up with a pair of medals - a gold and a bronze - at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships in December.

The Naperville, Ill. native added conference titles in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Pac-12 Championships. Cordes became the first Wildcat to earn Pac-12 Men's Swimmer of the Year since Simon Burnett won the honor in 2006.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 18,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
