Bakeries throughout Cincinnati are celebrating National Donut Day.
An event on Fountain Square will celebrate America's favorite treat while benefiting the Salvation Army on Friday afternoon.
The event, starting at noon, features celebrity donut games such as donut stacking and a donut hole toss.
Participating bakeries will be serving free donuts (while supplies last) and the Salvation Army will provide free beverages.
National Donut Day, which was established in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a depression-era outreach initiative, pays tribute to The Salvation Army volunteers who prepared donuts to thousands of soldiers during World War I.
Since then, National Donut Day events have been held in cities across the county by local Salvation Army units.
