PAULDEN, AZ (CBS5) -

A mother of six from Yavapai County has been locked up after detectives learned two of her young children were born exposed to drugs and two other children reported multiple "beatings."

Sonia Rios, 30, of Paulden, is being held on a $250,000 bond and facing nine counts of child abuse and neglect.

YCSO said they believe the abuse took place in the 25000 block of Maple Lane in Paulden and at a home in Ashfork.

Detectives said Rios struck her 2-year-old son on the back, chest and ankles with a piece of garden hose and a flyswatter on Sept. 29, 2012. He had bruises and cuts and was also very malnourished, according to YCSO.

Siblings of the toddler told detectives that they would secretly bring home food from school to feed their brother. Detectives said they were told that Rios allegedly used spicy sauce in the toddler's food so he would not eat it, to reduce the number of diaper changes she would have to make.

In December 2012, Rios had one of her children removed from the home that was born substance exposed because of Rios' drug use during her pregnancy, YCSO said.

Detectives learned during their current investigation that two more of her children were born substance exposed and they require special medical attention.

Rios' 9- and 11-year-old children reported "beatings" during recent months involving large metal spoons, a belt, and a piece of garden hose.

Rios was arrested on Wednesday.

All six children are in custody of Child Protective Services or have been adopted.
