Tanner English's circus catch No. 2 on SportsCenter list

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, NC (WIS) -

Gamecocks outfielder Tanner English received props from the guys on SportsCenter for what basically can be called a circus catch during the game against the UNC Tar Heels.

At the top of the 9th inning in Chapel Hill, UNC hitter Skye Bolt makes a big hit off pitcher Jordan Montgomery toward deep left center field, but English dives to make the catch, somersaults forward, and comes up with the ball still in his glove.

"In any language, that's a phenomenal catch," said the announcer.

"Jordan Montgomery is going to have to buy him dinner tonight," said the other announcer.

The play was featured on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays list at number two.

The catch would help the Gamecocks put a cap on their 8-0 victory against the Tar Heels.

The Gamecocks play the Tar Heels for a ticket to the College World Series Tuesday at 12 p.m.

Dylan Thompson threw for three touchdowns and No. 24 South Carolina's maligned defense stood strong on a fourth-quarter goal line stand to topple No. 6 Georgia 38-35 on Saturday night.
No. 24 South Carolina's defense showed it's not nearly as bad as it looked two weeks ago - and maybe that No. 6 Georgia isn't the runaway favorite in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.

Georgia can establish itself as a top-tier beast if it gets by South Carolina this weekend - and USC would drop to 0-2 in the league with a loss. Tennessee travels to Oklahoma, where Coach Bob Stoops doesn't believe the SEC is all-powerful.
