Gov. Jan Brewer has named a former state lawmaker as the new director of the Department of Veterans' Services.
Brewer announced Tuesday that Janson "Ted" Vogt would replace Joey Strickland after he was forced to step down as director in April.
Strickland was reprimanded for hiring former state Rep. Terri Proud after Brewer explicitly told him not to. Proud lost her job at the same time after she told a reporter that menstrual cycles might be too problematic for women to be in combat.
Vogt is a veteran of the Air Force, where he worked as an intelligence officer and served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom and throughout the greater Middle East during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Vogt served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from 2010 to 2013.
He earned a law degree from the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law and graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in history.
