PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police in Phoenix began safety courses Monday morning in hopes of preventing crashes between vehicles and people on foot.

The Corner 2 Corner program was designed as an effort to try and reduce collisions between pedestrians and motorists.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the collisions often happen when pedestrians cross mid-block, when pedestrians disregard safety around bus stops and the light rail and when motorists fail to yield for pedestrians in crosswalks.

The three-week program begins with a week of educational opportunities for both pedestrians and motorists. The following two weeks include enforcement efforts. The program runs through July 5.
