Transformer fire delivers one-two punch to downtown

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Two explosions shook downtown shortly after 6:30 Friday night, and knocked out the lights.

Tucson Fire Department said that a transformer fire underground blew the street-level grate into the air on Congress between Church and Stone.  No one was hurt.  One person was checked and not transported anywhere.  TFD said that about 30 people were evacuated from the area.  Congress from 6th Avenue to Church was closed most of the night.

The outtage originally hit about 60 Tucson Electric Power customers downtown.  Guaging the impact was difficult because one customer in downtown can be an entire building.  As of 10 p.m. Friday night, all but five customers had their power restored.  Work continued on the transformer.
