Transformer fire delivers one-two punch to downtown

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Two explosions shookdowntown shortly after 6:30 Friday night, and knocked out the lights.

Tucson Fire Departmentsaid that a transformer fire underground blew the street-level grate into theair on Congress between Church and Stone.  No one was hurt.  Oneperson was checked and not transported anywhere.  TFD said that about 30 peoplewere evacuated from the area.  Congress from 6th Avenue to Church wasclosed most of the night.

The outtage originallyhit about 60 Tucson Electric Power customers downtown.  Guaging the impactwas difficult because one customer in downtown can be an entire building. As of 10 p.m. Friday night, all but five customers had their powerrestored.  Work continued on the transformer.
