Starting today, a local group is kicking off a campaign that will last all summer long.
It's a push to get more people to move their meetings to restaurants and cafes downtown. It is called ‘Move your Meeting', and it highlights local places to eat and drink all along the modern streetcar route; the hope is that people support local businesses during the dry summer season.
When streetcar construction was going on and chain link fences were up, some shops saw more than a third of its business stay away. It put some of these small, ‘mom and pop' businesses up against the ropes. Of course summer brings tough times too.
This group is encouraging all Tucsonans to move their meetings along the streetcar. They are also building a petition to bring some of the companies and government offices downtown, instead of meeting in conference rooms, meet in coffee shops.
One of the organizers admits, it's going to be 106, it might be hard, but he says it's the right thing to do, especially because it's hard to do.
