TUCSON, Ariz. – Adam Byars, a former All-American and team captain at the University of Wisconsin, has been named to the Arizona swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach, head coach Eric Hansen announced on Friday. Byars will join Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Grevers and Weston Lagerhausen, who will also join the staff as volunteer assistants.
"Adam is a great coach and person that will contribute a great deal to our continued progress," Hansen said. "We are extremely excited about having Adam on deck and all that he will bring to the program."
Byars joins the Wildcats from the Aiken-August Swim League, where he worked for the past eight years -- the last six years serving as the club's program director and head coach. Byars graduated in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin, where he was a four-year letterwinner under Hansen and his older brother Nick Hansen. During his time at Wisconsin, he earned All-American honors. In addition, he was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, four-time Big Ten Championship finalist, team captain and team MVP in 2000-01.
Byars and his wife Ruth have two children, son Zachary and daughter Madeline.
Meanwhile, Grevers, a six-time Olympic medalist joins the staff as a volunteer assistant. He has won a total of 20 medals in major international competition, ten gold, seven silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, World Championships, and the Universiade. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Grevers won gold medals as a member of the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relay, and a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Four years later at the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won a gold in the 100-meter backstroke. Grevers is no stranger to Tucson and the Arizona swim program as he has trained for Tucson Ford Aquatics.
Lagerhausen comes to Tucson after a successful swimming career at the University of Wisconsin. Lagerhausen was recruited and swam for Hansen for three seasons prior to Hansen becoming the head coach at Arizona. A high school standout at Badger High School, Lagerhausen also was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team.
