16th annual El Dia de San Juan taking place tonight

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Happeningtoday, in honor of the monsoon, El Dia de San Juan Fiesta will be taking placethis evening.

Thefiesta will take place at I-10 and Congress, where the tradition of El Dia deSan Juan will continue tonight at 5 p.m.

El Dia deSan Juan or the Day of San Juan celebrates and honors the Saints day of SaintJohn the Baptist, and has been celebrated by families on the west side for nearly100years.

Localtradition celebrates St. John the Baptist as the one who brings the rains andkicks off the monsoon here in the Old Pueblo.

Sotonight is the 16th annual official celebration here in Tucson.

Theevening will begin with a procession at the west bank of the Santa Cruz River,then there will be plenty that follows, including live mariachi music, dancing,food, arts and crafts for the kids. There will also be free water, in honor of the monsoon.

Thefiesta is free and open to the public, it is very family friendly so no alcoholand no pets.  Start time is 5 p.m. andshould wrap up by 10 p.m.
