TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Tucson Fire Department battled a south side yard fire this afternoon at an auto salvage business in the 700 block of E. 36th Street that houses hundreds of cars.
Officials with the Tucson Police Department confirm that engine backfire caught the grass on fire just before 4 p.m.
Workers apparently started the engine of the car after putting in a new engine.
Crews had to forcefully open a fence to access the yard due to limited access. They originally used an extinguisher but windy weather caused the flames to spread.
Flames were impinging on a fence that separated the yard and a house next door, but crews were able to confine the fire.
Six to ten cars were damaged in the junkyard, though estimated damages have not been determined.
No homes were damaged and no one was reportedly injured.
