Streetcar contact wire - Tucson News Now

Streetcar contact wire project in place throughout summer

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Most of the Modern Streetcar tracks have been placed around the City of Tucson, but there are still several things that need to be done. One of those projects is getting power to the cars once they arrive.

Crews are working on the copper contact wire that will power the cars. Four crews were working on Congress from the pedestrian bridge to about 5th Avenue.

They were putting up wire that sits 19 feet from the ground. It will have 750 volts going through the wire and be part of the powering system of the Streetcar.

There are 13 sections of wire that will go up for the cars and they will follow the track route.

"This is the sixth, we still have seven more to go and that's going to be happen all throughout the summer," said Joe Chase, construction manager for the streetcar.

The city hopes that by the time all of the sections are done. The streetcars will be in town to run the test. They're hoping that time will by August or September.
