Arizona Wildcat junior Kevin Steel proved his morning stunner in the 50-meter breaststroke was no fluke.
Steel beat favorite and teammate Kevin Cordes in the prelim positing a new U.S. Open and long-course national record time of 27.33. He bested that by 7/100th (27.26) of a second in the final to edge Cordes (27. 38) again.
Wildcat swimmer Carl Mickelson finished seventh in the event with a time of 28.35.
Tucson Ford Aquatics has now won both breaststroke events and Cordes and Steel will go head-to-head again on Friday in the 100 meter event.
In other events, Sahuaro grad Caitlin Leverenz ('09) finished third in the women's 400-meter individual medley. In the 100-meter butterfly Christine Magnuson took 5th on the women's side while Giles Smith was 7th for the men. Matt Grevers placed second in the men's 50-meter backstroke.
