FOXBOROUGH, MA (WFSB) -

The New England Patriots announced a free exchange on Aaron Hernandez jerseys on Twitter Friday afternoon.

The announcement was made days after Bristol native and ex-Patriot Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder in the slaying of semipro football player Odin Lloyd.

The Patriots, who cut Hernandez following his arrest, drafted him in 2010 and signed him last summer to a 5-year contract worth $40 million.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

The New England Patriots' website said parents are encouraged to exchange their No. 81 Hernandez jerseys purchased from the Patriots ProShop and PatriotsProShop.com for any other Patriots player's jersey in the store.

"We know that children love wearing their Patriots jerseys, but may not understand why parents don't want them wearing their Hernandez jerseys anymore," said New England Patriots spokesperson Stacey James. "We hope this opportunity to exchange those jerseys at the Patriots ProShop for another player's jersey will be well received by parents."

The free exchange will only be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass on July 6 and 7.
