Bruce Ellington, Sammy Watkins named to "most versatile player" preseason list

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Gamecocks junior wide receiver and all-purpose player Bruce Ellington and Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins have been named to the Paul Hornung Award preseason watch list.

The Paul Hornung Award is given to college football's most versatile player.

It's hard to argue that Ellington doesn't deserve to be on that list. He led the Gamecocks last season in receiving yards with 600 yards on 40 catches, seven touchdowns -- two of those scored against Clemson -- and is one of the team's top kickoff returners.

Clemson's Watkins had a breakout season as a wide receiver in 2010 and quickly became one of the most dynamic players in college football with 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, his numbers did take a step back in 2011 with the emergence of DeAndre Hopkins as one of Tajh Boyd's go-to targets.

However, Ellington and Watkins have plenty of tough competition to face this season. Last year's Heisman winner, Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M, is also on the list.
