Miles Mikolas converted his 20th save of the season to seal a 4-3 win for the Tucson Padres over the Las Vegas 51s Sunday at Kino Stadium. The Padres have won four straight series and increase their Southern Division lead to 2.5 games.
Tucson scored first for the first time in the series after Dean Anna lined an RBI double to right in the bottom of the third. The Padres scored once more in the inning when Anna came home on a two-out throwing error by third baseman Zach Lutz. The 51s responded with one run in the fourth to cut the score to 2-1.
Las Vegas had an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth with a runner on third and one out, but Tommy Layne got two quick outs to preserve the lead. After Gregorio Petit extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a stolen base, Eddy Rodriguez drove him in with an RBI single for the Padres third run. Wilmer Flores' two-run double in the top of the seventh tied the score, but Mike Wilson's sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the seventh handed the lead back to the Padres.
Reliever Kevin Quackenbush earned his third win of the year, while Justin Hampson was charged with his second loss for Las Vegas, both coming in this series. Tucson starter Brandon Kloess allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Las Vegas manager Wally Backman and Lutz were both ejected in the seventh inning.
