PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A 29-year-old teacher at a Gilbert charter school has been sentenced for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student in his classroom.
Judge Warren Granville sentenced Andrew James Teaters to lifetime probation with sex offender terms, according to Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman Vincent Funari.
Teaters pleaded not guilty in court on July 8, 2014.
He was arrested on June 20, 2013 at his Mesa home by Gilbert police and booked into jail on three felony counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one felony count of sexual abuse. However, he was sentenced on lesser charges of one count child abuse.
According to a police statement, Teaters was having sex with the 17-year-old girl in his classroom at Gilbert Early College in late April 2013. Teaters, a sixth-grade teacher, told police he knew the girl was a minor.
The victim and Teaters told police the one-time sexual relationship was consensual, according to the police report.
