Flurry of drug arrests made at AZ border

NOGALES, AZ (CBS5) -

A Nogales man and three Mexican nationals are accused of attempting to smuggle drugs in separate incidents at the southern Arizona border.

All of the arrests occurred Friday at the Port of Nogales. 

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred a 23-year-old Nogales man for a secondary inspection of his SUV. Officers said they located 10 packages of cocaine, weighing nearly 26 pounds and valued at nearly $233,000, concealed behind the back seats. 

A few hours later, officers referred a 22-year-old Mexican woman for additional inspection as she attempted to enter the U.S. A CBP narcotics detection K-9 alerted to the presence of drugs. Officers said they removed close to 13 pounds of heroin, valued at more than $174,000, from under the back seats of her vehicle. 

Officers at the Morley Pedestrian Gate referred a 16-year-old Mexican national for additional questioning when he attempted to cross into the U.S. When officers searched the teen, they said they located nearly 1 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine, worth more than $23,000, hidden in the boy's groin area. 

The final arrest came as officers referred a 28-year-old Mexican woman for further inspection of her vehicle. They said they located nearly five pounds of methamphetamine, exceeding $75,000 in value, within a cooler and under the front passenger seat. 

All four suspects were referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
