Six new restaurants are expected to open on Congress Street near the Rialto Theater in the next few months, and some of them want to extend the sidewalk so they can offer outdoor dining.
But with narrow streets, the only way to do that is to take out parking spaces.
It's an issue on Fourth Avenue as well. Some restaurants already have seating on the sidewalk because it's part of the dining experience. The city wants the restaurants to be able to offer the amenity to their customers like many other cities do.
But there are a limited number of parking spaces, so the question is: what to do?
If the city allows the businesses to take away parking, then the city loses parking revenue as well as the spaces.
So there may be a meeting in the middle.
Some businesses also want to put up little parks, called parklets.
Parkwise will hold a meeting on the issue Tuesday morning and hopes to find a way to keep everybody Downtown happy.
One suggesting which will be talked about is a fee based on the number of parking spaces a business needs.
