One of downtown Nashville's most iconic buildings has received the highest certification for environmental friendliness, known as LEED Platinum.
Mayor Karl Dean and other city leaders made the announcement Tuesday afternoon at the Bridge Building, which was built on the east bank of the Cumberland River in 1908.
In recent years, Metro renovated the Bridge Building, which sits right beside the Shelby Street Bridge, with hopes of high efficiency.
Current tenants include the Southern Environmental Law Center, the not-for-profit Cumberland River Compact and The Bridge Building Event Spaces. The newest tenant will be Hastings Architecture's greenSTUDIO division. With the addition of greenSTUDIO, which is set to complete internal construction in July, The Bridge Building is 100 percent leased.
There are 4,467 other buildings in the LEED Core & Shell standard category in the whole world, and the Bridge Building is now recognized with the highest rating among them. LEED certification is earned for having features like energy efficiency and capturing rainwater.
