AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

The body that was discovered in Mud Brook Creek in Akron Sunday has been positively identified as 12-year-old Nicholas L. Shaffer.

Akron police say search crews located the body near Mud Creek in Akron at 11:21 a.m. Sunday.

Nic was swept away by Mud Brook Creek Thursday, July 18 after he fell into the flood-swollen creek near Timbertop Apartments.

Shaffer's mother tried to pull her son out, but was unable to do so.

Dive teams searched the area for hours on Thursday night without any luck, and called the search off around 9:30 p.m.

Nic Shaffer's family released the following statement:

"We would like to thank the men and women who have participated in the search and rescue effort. We are currently gathered together with family and friends and are hoping and praying for a miracle. We have been humbled by the offers for help we have received from family, friends and strangers. We have set up a fund to help with expenses we are likely to deal with in the future. We are praying we can use the fund to guarantee Nic's recovery from this ordeal; but, we are also preparing for the worst. The fund is called the Nic Shaffer Benefit account, donations may be made at any branch of Fifth Third bank, any donations would be greatly appreciated. God bless."
