A Rio Rico man was caught by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers trying to smuggle close to 27 pounds of cocaine into the United States on Monday.
Armando Gonzalez Barajas, 33, was trying to cross the border at the Port of Nogales in his Chrysler sedan when CBP referred him for additional screening. During the additional screening a CBP drug dog alerted officers to the presence of drugs in the dashboard.
When CBP officers inspected the dashboard they found 10 packages of cocaine. The cocaine found is worth more than $243,000.
Officers seized both the vehicle and the drugs.
Barajas was turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
