An Albany youth baseball team is preparing to represent the city at a big regional tournament.
Before they left, they got a word of encouragement from Mayor Dorothy Hubbard.
Hubbard invited the Albany American Dixie Youth Baseball Pee-Wee All Stars downtown Thursday morning to offer a word of encouragement before the team plays in the DYB Region II Machine Pitch Championships next weekend.
The mayor says it's all about letting these kids know the city of Albany is behind them.
"It is important anytime you have a group of young people who are trying to do the right thing, we as adults have to encourage them, to support them in every way we can," Hubbard says.
There's only one potential speed bump in the base paths for the team: raising enough money to make the trip.
The tournament is in Walterboro, SC, and coaches are hoping the community can help them get the team there.
"We're asking the city of Albany to get behind us, whatever you can do," says assistant coach Allen Williams. "We're not asking for a certain amount, just whatever you can do, and we'll accept that and we're grateful for that. We just need to get them there so they can do what they do best and that's play baseball."
