Experts: Do homework before hiring tree trimming service

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Summer storms in Arizona mean big business for Valley tree-trimming companies looking to cash-in on the mess in local neighborhoods.

But not all tree services come highly recommended.

"The first thing you want to look for, when looking for a tree service, is if they have certification and credentials on staff," said Jack Herndon, owner of Chip off the Old Block Tree Service.

Chip Off The Old Block has been breaking down branches since 1975 and has earned an "A" rating with the BBB.

CBS 5 News did some research to find the Valley tree services with the worst BBB ratings.

Some of the complaints reported were:

"Stay away from these guys."

"Dropped a tree off in my backyard and left it for a week."

"They overcharged me by $645."

Here is a list of five Valley tree service companies with an "F" rating:

  • My Tree Guy in Glendale
  • High Climbers in Phoenix
  • E & J Tree Service in Apache Junction
  • Al's Arizona Landscaping in New River
  • Transformations in Phoenix

However,  there are several tree services that have received an "A+" rating from the BBB.

They include:

  • The Artistic Arborist in Phoenix.
  • Murphy's A-1 Tree Service in Glendale
  • Cutting Edge Tree Service in Scottsdale
  • Broken Limb Landscaping Service in Peoria
  • AZ Tree Trimmer in Mesa

The BBB rating is based on several factors including number of complaints, how a business responds to complaints, and whether the company is properly licensed.

The best thing consumers can do, is a little homework on a company before they are needed, Herndon said.
