Tucson teen to have long-awaited bone marrow transplant

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (Tucson News Now) - Tomorrow is the day a Tucson teenager has been waiting for.  We're learning Lizzie Bell will begin having a life-saving bone marrow transplant Thursday at a Minneapolis hospital.

Tucson News Now has been following her story for years.  Lizzie has a rare form of anemia, in which she can't produce healthy red blood cells.  She currently needs a blood transfusion every couple of weeks.

The search for a marrow donor was difficult because she is a mixed race, but doctors found a perfect match for her last month.

Lizzie had a send-off party in Tucson last month before leaving for Minnesota.  We'll continue to update you on how she's doing.
