The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality offers tips for conserving resources and saving money while going back to school.
Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic may be known as the three "R's" for the new school year, but PCDEQ is encouraging the public to also be prepared to reduce, reuse and renew.
PCDEQ reports that driving one mile to and from school twice a day puts one pound of pollution into the air over a two week period. The department recommends carpooling, taking the school bus, riding bikes or walking.
Beth Gorman with PCDEQ said waste can be reduced at school with lunch boxes and cloth napkins; refillable bottles, pens and pencils; and rechargeable batteries. Keep an eye out for schools supplies made from recycled content and reuse backpacks, Gorman said.
