Cordes falls short in Spain

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

UA's Kevin Cordes may someday be a World Champion but now in August 2013 isn't that time.

Cordes failed to qualify Thursday for the Final in his main event, the 200-meter Breaststroke. A favorite going into the Championships in Barcelona, Cordes did not make the Finals in any of the three breaststroke events (50, 100 or 200).

The UA junior-to-be won the USA Championships in the 200 meters with a world-best time of 2:08.34, but could not come close to duplicating that at Worlds. He swam 12th in the morning prelim at 2:11.40 and finished a heartbreaking 9th in the semifinals touching in 2:10.03, .02 seconds off the 8th and final qualifying spot.

Cordes was appearing in his first world competition.

He started fast in the Semifinal and lead at the halfway point of the race, swimming 1:01.18 for the first 100-meters. But much like in Indianapolis when he was on a World Record pace through the first part of that race only to come up short on the record, Cordes faltered badly in the final 100 meters with a pace of 1:08.45 and finished short of Friday's Final.

In all Cordes will either look at his performance at the World Aquatics Championships as something to learn from or something he'd rather forget.

Elsewhere Christine Magnuson is the final swimmer from Tucson Ford Aquatics to hit the pool as she competes Friday in the 50-meter Butterfly.
