School is kicking off for the Sunnyside School District this morning, and one Sunnyside school has a new healthy program in the works.
This new program, at Apollo Middle school, is focused on student healthy eating. Apollo Middle School has been working with a local non-profit to renovate the Home-Ec kitchen so it can be used to teach students and offer the community cooking and nutrition classes.
‘Grow to be Fit' is a non-profit organization that works with families in Tucson to teach about nutrition, exercise and how to maintain healthy lifestyle habits.
The plan is to introduce healthy eating into the school curriculum for PE and health classes later this year.
The classroom will also serve the community during the evenings and weekends where local chefs will be brought in to offer healthy cooking.
