Palominas, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Palominas School District parents, teachers, students and staff got a shock on Monday, the day that was supposed to be the first day of the school year.
A monsoon storm dumped enough rain overnight to cause the cancellation of classes at the district's three schools.
The three schools have kindergarten through eighth grade classes.
District leaders decided washes were running too high and dirt roads were too flooded to be safe for school buses.
So classes were canceled for the 1,100 students, most of whom ride the bus to school.
District superintendent, Dr. Steve Poling, says the school buses will be rolling on Tuesday, barring another big storm like they had Monday night.
He says many of the roads in the 200-square-mile district are dirt and they get very messy in rain storms.
Palominas School District is in an area between Sierra Vista and Bisbee.
