Five injured in deputy-involved collision

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A vehicle collision on State Route 86 between a Pima County Sheriff's deputy and another vehicle sent five people to the hospital Monday night.

Tracy Suitt with the Pima County Sheriff's Department said the vehicle in front of Deputy John Weeks was about to make a U-turn near Milepost 132 when Weeks drove forward and hit the driver's side door. Weeks had checked for oncoming traffic before changing lanes to safely pass the slower vehicles when he was unable to avoid collision with the other vehicle.

Six people were in the vehicle that was hit and five of them were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two passengers were airlifted. The officer was not injured, according to Suitt.
