TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild is looking for hundreds of new volunteers to help kids boost their reading skills.
He is hoping to recruit 500 new Reading Seed volunteer reading coaches for struggling students.
Reading Seed is a literacy program that works toward getting struggling students up to their reading level by third grade.
Volunteers would be committing their time to students in kindergarten to third grade throughout Tucson schools. The idea of a reading coach is to provide a stress free environment where students can read books that interest them to their coach.
By adding 500 new volunteer reading coaches the size of the reading program would double.
Volunteers must meet the following requirements:
18 years or older, must go through a background check and attend training.
The program requires that volunteers commit to at least one hour a week. If not able to volunteer, people are encouraged to donate to the program.
