JLWS: Rio Rico a win away from U.S. Title game

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Just like Sunnyside Softball, Rio Rico Baseball is trying to turn an opening game loss at the World Series into a championship.

Forced to play two games Wednesday due to weather delays on Tuesday, Rio Rico came away with a pair of 2-1 wins to stay alive in Pool Play at the Junior League World Series in suburban Detroit, Michigan.

Rio Rico will play Lafayette, Louisiana at 2:15 p.m. (Tucson Time) Thursday for a berth in the semifinals (United State Championship).

A win would earn Rio Rico a rematch against the team from Goodlettsville, Tennessee that had handed them their lone loss.

Oscar Lechuga, Jr. went all the way on the mound in a 2-1 win over Long Island, New York. Rio Rico needed extra innings in the nightcap to beat Bedford, Indiana, scoring a run in the top of the 8th.

Rio Rico pitching has been stellar. They've allowed just five runs in their three games.

Rio Rico is trying to become the third Arizona team to win the Junior League World Series and second from Southern Arizona.

Sunnyside took the title in 1992 and Scottsdale Mountain View won it in 2009. Ironically Rene Ayala, who led Sunnyside Softball to the Little League World Series title Wednesday, was a member of that 1992 Sunnyside team.

Sunnyside Baseball also advanced to the U.S. Championship game at the JLWS just two years ago but lost to the eventual World Champions from Tampa, Florida.
