TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Residents can get rid of their unused and old prescription medications at the Dispose-a-Med event, hosted by the Pima County Sheriff's Department on Saturday.

Prescription and over-the-counter tablets, capsules, liquids, and creams can be collected anonymously and for free from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Pantano Christian Church, located at 1755 South Houghton Road.

Metal or glass inhalation aerosol bottles, syringes and epipens will not be accepted. Items will not be returned.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department collected approximately 1,553 pounds of unused or expired prescription drugs in 2012, according to department officials.

Reports reveal that teenagers abuse prescription drugs more than any other illegal drug except for marijuana. They may have free access to these drugs from friends and relatives, medicine cabinet raids or from "pharming parties," where teens barter legal drugs and get high, according to a news release.

Also, one in five teens report intentionally misusing someone else's prescription drugs to get high, officials say.

The department encourages disposing of these medications because flushing or pouring them down a sink cause ecological harm as wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove those drugs.
