TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

South Tucson Officers responded to a call that involved a man with a gun at 12:50 a.m. on 29th street and 5th avenue. 

According to South Tucson Police PIO, Lt. Jeff Inorio, the caller stated the subject was armed with a shotgun, and an argument was heard in the background.

The phone line then disconnected and officers responded to the area. As the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the subject was clutching what appeared to be a shotgun.

The subject ran a short distance and turned around and faced the officer in a threatening manner.

The officer fired his duty weapon striking the subject multiple times. The subject was then transported to a local hospital where he is in surgery at this time.

The subject has not been identified and the shotgun was recovered at the scene.

Pima County Sheriff's Department was contacted and is now conducting an investigation.
