PHOENIX (AP) - Firefighters and others in Prescott have showed a resolve toward rebuilding an elite hotshot firefighting team that lost 19 of its members in a wildfire in late June near Yarnell.
But The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/16Y6pj9) that questions about the cost, practicality and political challenges of rebuilding raise doubts about whether the Granite Mountain Hotshots will ever fight another fire.
One factor is that qualified staff would be difficult to find.
The decision to fund those employees long term will fall to elected officials who now must balance the fiscal impact with their community's emotions.
Prescott City Attorney Jon Paladini said last week that the insurance pool that covers the city's liability and workers' compensation claims may not be able to provide insurance for a new hotshot team.
