TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It's officially here - Tucson's 238th birthday.  There has been a lot of celebrating in August, but today is the official birthday of the ‘Old Pueblo'.

Tucson has been around for 238 years, and doesn't look a day over 237.  A secret to the longevity of the Old Pueblo – location, location, location, this is according to retired historian Jim Turner.

The dry weather and available water also helped people, both ancient and modern to stay in the area.

Archaeologists have even discovered a prehistoric city from 2000 BC.

Events continue this week to celebrate the birthday of Tucson, and one such event is a flag raising ceremony this evening at Presidio San Agustin del Tucson, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  This free event will feature mariachi music, a canon salute and birthday cake.

Further events this week include:

August 23 – Postal History Foundation Party at the Postal History Museum from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

August 24 – Mexican Heritage Project Panel Discussion at the Arizona Historical Society from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
