TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Happening today, as students head back to class at the University of Arizona, a new addition to the student recreation center will be opening.

Cherry Street Field will be open for U of A students and community members to enjoy.  The new facility includes seating for 750 spectators, a scoreboard, lighting and sound system and restrooms.

Construction on Cherry Street began in January of this year.  The Board of Regents approved the new field to replace the campus recreation centers loss of access to Murphy Field at Rincon Vista.

This new sports field is a tremendous addition to the main campus.  Hundreds of student athletes playing in club sports will be able to use it, in addition there will be hours when community members can also use the field.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be today at 5 p.m., marking the start of ‘Meet me at the Rec'; a carnival themed event to kick off the fall semester.
