Streetcar forums wrap up with western terminus

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The fourth and final street car forum on Monday focused on the west end of the street car line or its western terminus. Developers and residents of the area say development needs to move more quickly.  But they also say the area will have a good combination of public and private development to generate tax revenue.

"Hopefully there will be a strong focus on, emphasis on the historical aspects of the area which have received considerable level of planning and furthermore, that will dovetail nicely with the private development that's going on with more of the commercial retail and mixed-use housing north of Cushing (Street)," said Adam Weinstein, a partner with the Gadsden Company.

"We certainly are disappointed that the museum structures are not going to be part of what was the original plan. But also where there's a crisis there's opportunity and now there's opportunity for economic development and private development in the area that I think will really help," said Roger Pfeiffer, co-chair of Friends of Tucson's Birthplace.

The west end has similar challenges with zoning as downtown and a concern to preserve historic features just like West University and 4th Ave. Consultants will present the entire streetcar line development concept to the Tucson City Council on September 10.
