MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South teenager says even though she was stabbed walking home from school, she is still smiling because she is alive. Police charged a parent with two counts of aggravated assault Monday for allegedly stabbing and cutting two girls who were fighting with her daughter and her daughter's friends.

Tanyai Sims cannot believe a grown woman stabbed two teens. Sims told police that she was jumped by suspect, Valerie Potts, along with Potts' daughter and two men. A brawl ensued and the teens say Potts charged at them with a kitchen knife.

"We were leaving school," said Sims."She came back with her mom, sister and brother and they started jumping on me."

Sims suffered a puncture wound to the back, while the other teen had to get stitches near her eye.

"I was just so shocked," said sister, Angelica Hooks who was a witness. "That's when the grown woman jumped in with her knife, and she started swinging the knife stabbing folks ... I think they could have worked it out better instead of fighting, and the woman she didn't have to do all that. She could have just gotten her daughter, taken her home and talked to my mom."

Despite the run-in, the girls have compassion for Potts' predicament.

"She won't see her kids now. It's just sad," said Hooks.

Sims would not say why she was arguing with the suspect's daughter, but she did say the situation got out of hand. Sims hopes to return to school tomorrow.

Potts is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. She is in Shelby County Jail East on a $80,000 bond.
