Metro police arrested the man they believe was responsible for a recent rash of car burglaries in the Germantown/Salemtown area.

Police arrested convicted robber Nathaniel Gardner Jr. 53, after a citizen reported seeing a man break into vehicles in the 1300 block of Seventh Avenue North.

Sgt. Brian Brown and Officer Doyle Wilhoite Jr. were in the area at the time of the call due to the recent break-ins. Both officers approached on foot and saw Gardner break the rear passenger side window of a Ford Escape and crawl inside the SUV.

Brown and Wilhoite took Gardner into custody after a brief struggle.

Gardner, of Ninth Avenue North, is currently charged with two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond. Police anticipate additional charges could be placed.

Gardner was convicted in 2006 of robbing a real estate agent and her client of their purses while they were visiting a house on Jones Avenue. He also has previous robbery and burglary convictions in Montgomery County.
