District offering solution for student hunger problem

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Arizona has recently been called the worst state in the country when it comes to children going hungry; children who do not get enough to eat make for poor students.

One district in Tucson, JTED is hoping they have a way to help solve the problem.

There have been a number of reports that rank Arizona low on the list in terms of poverty.  According to a report from ‘Feeding America' Arizona tied for worst state nationwide for kids going hungry.

Last year, more than one in five households in the state reported not having enough money to buy the food they needed for themselves or their family.

Hunger and lack of nutrition lead to lower academic achievement, lower test scores and students missing school days.  At the two JTED campuses, students will be offered free, healthy snacks every day.

JTED is the Joint Technical Education District, it offers specialized education to some high school students.  The new program starts this month.  The hope is that it has a lasting effect for the students here.
