PHOENIX (AP) - An unusual event was declared at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Arizona late Monday when insulation behind a pump caught fire.

The fire did not interrupt power production at the three-reactor plant located 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix and it is reported running normally Tuesday.

An unusual event is the lowest of 4 emergency levels for nuclear power plants. A notice on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's web site says there was no release of radioactive material and no threat to public health or safety.

According to the notice, the fire was detected when a security guard spotted smoke in a turbine area of Unit 2. Firefighters put out the fire 45 minutes later.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
