Is Padres chapter the last for pro baseball in Tucson?

The final chapter has been written for the Padres in Tucson.  Some say, other than UA baseball, it's also the end of baseball in the Old Pueblo.

Last week's final home game had the second biggest attendance of the season.  Even though the good turnout was too late, it was a nice goodbye for the Padres.  The team finished their season on Monday with a win in Las Vegas.

It would be easy to rehash the failures and low turnout we've had with baseball:  the loss of spring training, the Toros, the Sidewinders and now the Padres.

Maybe Tucson really isn't a baseball town.

The Padres management disagrees and predicts baseball will be back.

But without the fans attending all of the games baseball can't survive.

So we thank Mike and Patty Feder and the rest of the staff and players of the Padres.  They put their heart and soul into this game and into Tucson.

We wish the Padres the best in El Paso - and thank them for three great years.

As we wish a fond farewell to the El Paso-bound Padres, professional baseball's future in Tucson is in doubt.
