(RNN) - The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has authorized President Barack Obama to use military force against Syria.
Obama asked Congress for the authority for military engagement after Syrian President Bashar Assad allegedly used chemical weapons against civilians.
The vote was 10-7. The Senate will likely vote on the measure next week.
Secretary of State John Kerry has testified in front of the Senate committee yesterday, and is testifying in front of a House committee Wednesday.
Both Obama and Kerry have said military force will be missile strikes, and ground troops will not be sent into the conflict.
