PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Two people were trapped after their vehicle hit a cement barrier and drove down an embankment early Sunday morning, Phoenix police said.

It took first responders about 30 minutes to free the occupants from the wreckage.

The patients, whose names were not released, were rushed to a local hospital and are expected to be OK.

Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said it appears the driver lost control of the car as it was southbound on Seventh Avenue just before 1 a.m.  After hitting the barrier near the Salt River overpass, the vehicle fell down a rock embankment to the river bottom, Crump said.

Officials said it was a miracle the pair survived. Witnesses told police they saw the car traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed and veered off the roadway.

Crump said alcohol appears to be factor in the accident.
